Stay in Hulhumalé if you want a long public beach a few minutes' walk from your hotel, wider streets and late-night food (ten places there stay open past 1 AM). Stay in Malé if you want to walk from your hotel to the old mosques, Sultan Park and the fish market. Malé is crowded and busy; Hulhumalé was reclaimed from the lagoon and laid out on a grid.

Is it better to stay in Malé or Hulhumalé?

It depends on what you want near your hotel: Malé for the old centre on foot, Hulhumalé for the beach and the late-night food. The islands differ in size, crowding, beach access and what is near your hotel. We list 11 hotels and guesthouses on the two islands: 5 in Malé and 6 in Hulhumalé.

  • Malé: about 2.1 square km of land and 137,238 residents at the 2022 census, about 66,000 people per square km.
  • Hulhumalé: about 4.2 square km of land and 65,714 residents at the 2022 census, about 15,700 people per square km.
  • Distance between them: about 8 km by road across the Sinamalé Bridge, about 13 minutes without traffic to Hulhumalé Phase 1 (map routing, checked in November 2026).

Staying in Malé: what is within walking distance

Malé is the capital and the commercial and political centre of the Maldives, with the old mosques and the fish and produce markets. A hotel in the old centre puts the sights a short walk away. The Somerset Hotel is next to the National Museum and Sultan Park, and Hukuru Miskiy (the Old Friday Mosque) and the fish market are about five minutes away. Maagiri Hotel is on the north waterfront, with the fish and produce markets a few minutes' walk along the harbour and the Islamic Centre a short walk inland.

The sights are Hukuru Miskiy, the Islamic Centre (visitors go in outside prayer times), Sultan Park, Muliaage, which is viewed from the street, and the Fish Market. Our walking route through the old centre links them in about two hours at an easy pace.

Malé is also the more crowded of the two islands. Motorcycles fill the streets, and walking from one end of the island to the other through the traffic can feel overwhelming. Malé's public beaches on our site are Rasfannu Beach on the western seafront, enclosed by breakwaters, and the Artificial Beach on the eastern coast.

Of the hotels we list, only two in Malé list a pool: Barceló Nasandhura Malé and JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La. None of the six Hulhumalé stays on our list lists one.

Maagiri Hotel is directly opposite the airport ferry terminal, and the airport ferry crossing takes about 10 minutes.

Staying in Hulhumalé: the beach, the restaurants and the airport road

Hulhumalé has wider streets and newer buildings than Malé. The main public beach of Phase 1 is on the east side of the island, with guesthouses along it and cafes across the road. All six Hulhumalé stays on our list are on that beach or within a few minutes' walk of it. Nudity and topless sunbathing are banned everywhere in the Maldives.

Our listings have 85 places to eat in Hulhumalé and 47 in Malé (counted in November 2026). Ten places in Hulhumalé stay open past 1 AM, eight of them listed on our site, including Delizus Food and Coffee and Dhiggaru Cafe, which are open 24 hours.

Friday and Saturday are the weekend. Across Malé City most restaurants stay closed through Friday morning and open after Friday prayers, and a few open in the morning.

Hulhumalé is joined to the airport island by road. Hulhumalé Phase 1 is about 6.5 km and 13 minutes from the airport without traffic. Away from the beach there are Central Park and the Hulhumalé Channel.

Which island suits which traveller?

Pick Malé if you:

  • want to walk from your hotel to Hukuru Miskiy, Sultan Park, the markets and the National Museum area.
  • want a hotel that lists a pool: Barceló Nasandhura Malé or JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La.
  • want to sleep across the road from the airport ferry (Maagiri Hotel).
  • want a hotel our site labels Luxury: Barceló Nasandhura Malé, JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La and Maagiri Hotel are in Malé, and no Hulhumalé stay has that label.
  • accept a crowded island with heavy motorcycle traffic.

Pick Hulhumalé if you:

  • want a public beach within a few minutes' walk of your room.
  • want late-night food: ten places in Hulhumalé stay open past 1 AM.
  • want wider streets and about a quarter of Malé's population density (about 15,700 residents per square km against 66,000 at the 2022 census).
  • want a hotel our site labels Budget: Turquoise Residence by UI is the only one on either island, and the other five Hulhumalé stays are labelled Mid-Range.
  • have a very early flight: h78 Maldives serves breakfast from 5 AM for morning flights.

What is the same on both islands

  • Alcohol: the city and the local islands do not serve alcohol, so no hotel on Malé or in Hulhumalé does. Resorts and Hulhule Island Hotel are the licensed exceptions.
  • Airport transfers: free airport transfers are listed by The Somerset Hotel, Maagiri Hotel and JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La (by speedboat) in Malé, and by h78 Maldives and h78 Veli in Hulhumalé.
  • Swimwear: nudity and topless sunbathing are banned everywhere in the Maldives, and Malé City has no bikini beaches. Swim in modest swimwear at the public beaches.

A hotel on the airport island

For a very early flight, Hulhule Island Hotel is the only hotel on the airport island. It is less than a five-minute drive from the terminal and has a free 24-hour shuttle. Unlike the hotels on Malé and in Hulhumalé, it is licensed to serve alcohol.
